Q & A with Alberto and Selena Hoyos

Co-founders, Rhythmic Harmony International, Inc.

Companies are run by people and it is a well known fact that happy people are more productive people. When management focuses on helping improve the lives of employees, that effort becomes a catalyst for improvement throughout the entire company which, ultimately, can have a positive effect on the overall bottom line.

Alberto and Selena Hoyos have nearly 50 years combined experience, as dancers, performers and instructors. During that time, they have taught thousands of individuals and corporate groups how to dance through life. And, they’ve heard all the excuses you can imagine about why people are reluctant to dance, from people who claim they have two left feet to those that fear they have no rhythm.

Following are some of the most common excuses and questions Alberto and Selena get when talking to people about the power of dance:

“Why do you believe life is a dance?”

For Alberto and Selena, “to dance is to live and to live is to dance.” Dance is beautiful and elegant, exciting and passionate, just like life. To achieve success, both dance and life require a combination of mental, physical and spiritual energy and balance. Achieving balance between the three allows us to dance and live in rhythmic harmony.”

“I have no rhythm.”

Many people honestly believe they have no rhythm. Alberto and Selena explain that “everyone has rhythm. We walk in rhythm, talk in rhythm, even our hearts beat in rhythm. It’s simply  a matter of timing and we can teach you the timing.”

“I have two left feet!”

This is one of Alberto and Selena’s favorite, and most frequently heard, excuses. When someone tries this one on them, their comforting response is simply “It is your lucky day, because my shipment of right feet just arrived…”

“Is there anyone who can not learn to dance?”

Alberto and Selena have taught the blind. They’ve taught the deaf. There is no such thing as a person who can not learn to dance, only a person who has no desire and/or chooses not to learn. Everything in life is a choice. What you expect is what you’ll get. What you believe is what you’ll conceive. Alberto and Selena don’t just teach the philosophies of dance, they teach the philosophies of life. Dancing isn’t just about learning the steps. It’s about understanding there are many options and choices and we choose our direction in dance and in life.

What is the hardest part about learning to dance?

Getting people to stop being analytical. Many potentially successful dance students suffer from “paralysis by analysis.” When you over-analyze what you are learning, it stops you from being free and flowing, and dance is all about being free and flowing. It is about knowing you are already a dancer inside yourself. Alberto’s and Selena’s roles are to bring the dancer inside out into the open. In fact, that is why, years ago when they launched their own enterprise, they named their parent company Rhythmic Harmony. They utilize the power of rhythm to bring harmony to the body, mind and spirit.

“How can I dance like you?”

This is another question Alberto and Selena encounter on a regular basis. Their advice is simple: remember the three Ps – practice, persistence, and perseverance. Alberto and Selena encourage their students to “dance the dance that you’ve been shown until you dance the dance of your own. The goal is not to dance like me but to dance like who you are. On your individual journey, you will learn from many others along the way. If you focus on being better than others, you’ll short change the best that you can be. If you focus on being the best you can be, you’ll be the best.”

“I thought I was hiring you to be my dance teachers, but you’ve become my life coaches.”

Alberto and Selena do not focus solely on the dance, steps or technique. From the beginning, they teach the whole person (body, mind and spirit) to dance. Because dancing is a whole body experience, students must progress in all areas. Each person has different areas that need to grow and all dances have something to teach us. “We do not teach dance to the person. We teach the person to dance.”

Because they believe so passionately that the power of dance can be used to unleash a person’s full potential, Alberto and Selena welcome questions and actually enjoy the excuses they hear. Drawing on their extensive experience, they are able to help clients break through the fears and self consciousness that not only keeps them from learning to dance, it also prevents them from living and enjoying life at their full potential. And those most reluctant often become the most dedicated students. Once they break through that initial fear, they gain a new level of confidence that enables them to reach new heights in their careers, as well as their personal lives.
